10/31/2023:

Kwang-Hun's paper on high-resolution mapping of water quantity and quality using uncrewed surface vehicle (USV)  was accepted in Water Resources Research. In his paper, he explored the applicability of  USV to dual monitoring of water quantity and quality at the Daljeon reservoir near the POSTECH campus in Pohang, South Korea. My students, Yena and Shahid, assisted on-site sampling surveys over 2021-2022. 

Profs. Kitack Lee (POSTECH, AGU Fellow 19') and Sae Yun Kwon (POSTECH) are coauthors of this paper.

The proposal, "Development of Medium- to Long-Range Hydrologic Forecasting System for Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna River Basins", was funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea. The goal of this project is to develop the 14-day hydrologic forecasts of Ganages-Brahmaputra-Meghna River basins. We are seeking a postdoc and graduate students who are highly self-motivated.

Dr. Song's paper on the utility of remotely operated underwater vehicle in flood inundation mapping for dam failure: A case study of Lake Tuscaloosa Dam was accpeted in River Research and Applications. He was a former Ph.D. student of my group at the University of Alabama when I was an assistant professor. This paper is a main chapter of his Ph.D. dissertation. It has been for a while to have this paper accepted but I believe that his work will be well received.

Jiam's paper on online search activities of shopping item  modeling was accepted in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications (Nature Springer). The title of his paper was "Evidence of time-varying impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on online search activities of shopping items in South Korea." In his paper, he applied SVD-based PCA to NAVER Shopping Insight data (from the NAVER DataLab) to investigate the time-varying impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Chang-Kyun Park's paper on the sub-seasonal to seasonal outlook of the 2022-23 Southwestern Korea drought  was accepted in Environmental Research Letters. He is now affiliated with the SNU Environmental Planning Institute. In his paper, he assessed the sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction skill of the SubX and NMME models for the 2022-23 southwestern Korea drought. Please check the article webpage:

9/12/2023:

A meeting summaries article about the 1st A3 workshop was accepted in Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. The 1st A3 workshop was held at BEXCO, in Busan South Korea. We had 39 oral presentations of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean earth scientists with over 250 participants.  The 2nd A3 workshop will be held in Lingshui, Hainan Province, China over 18-20 December, 2023. 

I am looking forward to participating in the 2nd A3 workshop.

Dr. Kam is promoted as Associate Professor (tenure track) on September 1, 2023 after 3.5 years at POSTECH. So far, his 3.5-year experience at POSTECH has been a blessing to have supportive and collaborative faculty members and staffs and diligent students. It couldn't be better. Thanks to all! Another chapter starts.

Eunmi's paper on AI modeling for multi-purpose dam operation was accepted in Journal of Hydrology. The title of her paper was "Deciphering the black box of deep learning for multi-purpose dam operation modeling via explainable scenarios." In her paper, she proposed a method to understand AI's decision-making processes for dam operation patterns that learned from big data. Please check the article webpage:

Dr.  Chang-Kyun Park moved to Seoul National University (SNU) and will  work under the supervision of Prof. Su-Jong Jeong. During his time at POSTECH, he had worked on understanding the characteristics of social droughts and assessing the sub-seasonal prediction skill of multi-year South Korea droughts. We appreciate his hard work and wish the best luck at SNU.

Dr. Sungyoon Kim's recent work on irrigation impact on the regional hydroclimate over the southern U.S. states was accpeted in Environmental Research Letters (ERL). Dr. Kim was my former PhD student at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa USA, and is currently a postdoctoral researcher at George Mason University, Maryland USA.  The corresponding author of this paper is Dr. Mukesh Kumar at the University of Alabama. I am a co-author of this paper.

Dr. Kam, Yena, and Eunmi gave oral presentations on their recent projects during the 2023 Korea Water resources Association Annual Meeting in Gosung, Kwangwon-Do.

Yena's presentation got an outstanding presentation award. Yena's recent presentation was about changes in nutrient flux budget over the Korean Peninsula over 2012-2021. 

Eunmi gave two oral presentations in the sessions of international session (in English) and flood.

4/15/2023:

Dr. Park's recent work on the ongoing 2022-23 southwestern Korea drought is presented during the 2023 Korean Meteorological Society Spring Meeting. 

This work provides the required precipitation amount for the regional drought recovery and full recovery and its sub-seasonal and seasonal outlooks based on empirical and dynamical forecasts.

3/31/2023:

Jiam's proposal for the POSTECH Alchemist Program was selected to support his research. His proposal was to investigate changes of the public's purchase patterns during the 2022 Southwestern Korea drought via Big Data (e.g., credit card expenditure data). 

The financial support from the POSTECH Alchemist Program will support his research by providing a financial aid for the purchase of the credit card data. This will be a great opportunity for Jiam to explore a new research direction from the perspective of sociohydrology. 

I am looking forward to seeing what he will find from Big Data.

3/9/2023:

Anqi's recent work on sentimental analysis of water pollution complaint reports was accepted in npj Clean Water.  This study analyzed the sentiment alteration of over 10,000 water pollution complaint reports from residents of the U.S. state of Alabama during climate extremes and the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The coauthors are Profs. Sae Yun Kown (POSTECH) and Wanyun Shao (University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa). 

npj Clean Water's journal impact factor is 12.19 (2021) and is ranked in the 2nd place among the 100 journals of the water resources category.

1/9/2023:

Dr. Kam gave an oral presentation about  the attribution study of the 2020/21 Iran drought, which was published in Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (JIF: 9.116 and Rank: 6/94 (Meteorology & Atmospheric Sciences)). 

This work assessed the relative contribution of greenhouse gas-only and natural-only forcing to the risk of 2020/21-like Iran droughts, using the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6).  This study was released in a BAMS special issue, "Explaining Extreme Events of 2021 and 2022 from a Climate Perspective".
